ISABELLE LIGHTWOOD
Did you study "The Art of War"? You should learn it. Sun Tzu gives excellent advice. "Move swift as the wind, and closely formed as the wood. Attacks like fire." But my favorite: "To know your enemy, you must become your enemy." SHADOWHUNTERS

Isabelle is the middle child of three siblings — Alec being the oldest, and Max being the youngest. She's also the sister of Jace, who was taken in by the Lightwoods at a young age when his father was murdered. She grew up and trained alongside her brothers, and continues to fight with them in the field. Always her daddy's little girl, she grew up being doted on, though nobody ever went easy on her. She always pushed herself to excel in her studies, and to get faster and stronger. She'd never allow for herself to be underestimated. As she grew older, she found she attracted a lot of the male gaze with her good-looks, and decided she liked that. She makes a point to dress up, and show off, oozing confidence with everything she does.
Her parents, Maryse and Robert Lightwood, were once influential members of the Clave. They joined Valentine's Circle, which stated its intent was to keep mundanes and Shadowhunters safe, and thought all Downworlders needed to be wiped out to accomplish that. Since the signing of the Accords, which was meant to protect Downworlders from Shadowhunters, and bring the two groups into a state of peace, The Circle was seen as a sort of radical group. Just before the Uprising (a battle between the Circle and the Clave, involving Downworlders as well), Maryse and Robert made a deal with the Clave, they were pardoned for their cooperation, but essentially banned to head up the New York Institute. These days, the Lightwood name is often met by a little bit of scorn and a lot of scrutiny.
First and foremost, Isabelle is a Shadowhunter. Essentially, she’s mostly human, but with a strong streak of angel blood inside of her that turns her into something else entirely. This means she’s a warrior. It means she fights the big bad things that lurk in the night, like demons and rogue vampires and werewolves. It’s her duty as a Shadowhunter to protect mundanes from these things, since they’re in no shape to protect themselves, seeing as they’re not even aware of the shadow world’s existence. Being a Shadowhunter comes with a certain amount of honor and cockiness, not unlike some prestigious boy’s club. At times, they tend to display a holier-than-thou attitude, and Isabelle is no exception to that.
It’s just how they were raised. Shadowhunters are born to believe that they’re stronger, faster, and all together better than those around them. In their defence, it’s hard not to believe when you’ve got angel blood in you. Isabelle, for her part, tends to tone the cockiness down a bit, but she certainly displays a hell of a lot of confidence. Of course, being apart of this so-called boy’s club also means that Isabelle comes with a stubborn streak. When you’re raised to believe you’re the best of the best, then you start to believe you can do anything. And Isabelle? Boy, does she think she can do anything. You’ll be hard-pressed to get her to let go of anything, or to get her to cave to demands she doesn’t agree with. She can be defiant as hell in the face of authority, especially if that authority is threatening her morals or loved ones. That’s the thing about Isabelle. No matter how stubborn or cocky or tough she is, she tends to be very quick to love. She’s incredibly welcoming towards others, assuming they’re not doing that threatening-loved-ones thing. She’s willing to give most people the benefit of the doubt, but she certainly won’t be fucked over by the same person more than once. Friendly and compassionate, Isabelle’s job as a Shadowhunter means more to her than duty and honor — she loves her job because she loves helping people, saving lives and make the world a better and safer place to live in. This also means her moral compass is incredibly on point. A true chaotic good, she’ll break every rule in the book to make sure justice is served.
